Author Guidelines

Scholarly Articles
continent. receives scholarly articles with the understanding that the contents are original, unpublished material and have not been submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors intending to republish articles, or to use previously published material as part of an article, must indicate this intention at the time they accept the invitation to publish or, in the case of unsolicited articles, at the time of submission.

continent. reserves the right to edit contributions. Authors have the opportunity to review corrections before publication, provided the articles are submitted to the editors in good time.

continent. reserves the right to return articles unpublished if they do not meet with the journal’s standards.

The Editors reserve the right to return proposals and approved commentaries without explanation.


1. File Format: MS-Word (.doc) or RTF format
2. Appearance: Single line spacing throughout (including endnotes and references), 11-point Arial or Helvetica font, 1" indentation for paragraphs and blockquotes, headings and subheadings in bold.
3. Illustrations/Graphics: placed within the text at the appropriate points.
4. Notes: continent. publishes using Chicago Style.

1. File Formats accepted for video include any formats supported by the Vimeo online hosting system. Photos are hosted on Flickr, so any formats that are publishable there are also publishable to continent. Sound files are hosted by Soundcloud, which requires one of the following formats: MP3, WAVE, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, MP2, and/or AAC files.
2. Appearance: By default, still photo/image submissions will be presented, with an editorial introduction, as a slideshow embedded on the continent. site (Other options are available at the author's preference). Video is likewise embedded in the article, and introduced via the article listing on the issue front page. Soundfiles are embedded and playable via the continent. website, and/or downloadable (at the creator's discretion).
3. Experimental formats and investigations into the materiality of the web and its conventions and standards are especially welcomed. Please contact one of the Co-Editors via email to discuss.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. 1. The submitting author has the right to publish the submitted work.  Publishing history and any other publication channels currently consideration the work should be mentioned via an explanation in Comments to the Editor(s).
  2. 2. The submission file is in an acceptable format for submission to the journal.
  3. 3. Wherever available, URLs for the work and references have been provided.
  4. 4. Any text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. 5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which are found in "About the Journal."
  6. 6. Non-text submission formats, or formats which are layout specific, such as images (still and moving), poetry, fiction, sound, or online media are reviewed and curated by the editors.
