The Unofficial View of Tirana (44)

Freaking cameras at freaking press conference

Ok, so I’m fed up with writing about the first exhibition of Albanian queer culture Kukafshehti that I curated together with Aleanca Kundër Diskriminimit LGBT last week in Tirana Ekspres, but I can refer you to an article on the HuffPost, “Albania: The Gay Movement You Never Imagined” and a surreal trackback on The Daily Beast, “The Obama of Albania,” after (ironic?) remarks made by PM Berisha some years ago (I heard the joke that Berisha would gladly marry another man to get into the EU). Documentation of the opening on my website, and an Albanian language interview in Panorama. Also, or further enjoyment, a video clip of the “Gay Ride,” including firework bombs throws at us by pitbull katunars. Happy grinding.

BOOM!

And just for fun and information, a trashy documentary shot by two fellow countrymen, Daan Vonk and Theo Roelofs, driving through Albania on mopeds, documenting (at 25’40″ if you’re impatient) the marvelous village of Lazarat, where all of Albania’s (and the region’s) weed is produced under the sweet protection of home made kalashnikovs and countryside hospitality. I was told that the village as a whole operates as a cooperative, each family getting a part of the profit proportional to their harvest. They sell in bulk. During weddings they decorate the weed plants with lights or bend them into arches. Now that’s a celebration! (Photos)
