I just received a copy of [NAME] Publications‘ newest title and it’s gorgeous.
Something like a split 7 inch, the book(s) is a collaboration between Oliver Wasow (Artist Unknown) and John D. Monteith (The Free World) as they sifted through tens of thousands of images found or captured through web cams or sent to them through their social networks. It raises the question, what is the proper title for the selection of images that one shares on tumblr? Is it curated or edited? What is this digital flânerie?
Overall, the book(s) present to the reader the variety and ubiquity of vernacular and found photography spanning both film and digital formats. There is also the transition from the snap shot—which have a tendency to remain in one’s collection because they had to be developed and paid for—to the digital file—which are more disposable in a sense because there is no cost or noticeable depletion of resources in their making.Together these collections of images are delightful. I felt a sense of having been revisited by old friends and a certain 90s-era naïve optimism. A sorta catalog of looking glass self adults as they entered the information economy “now I’M the object of the screen’s affection!” type of sentiment.
If you’re in Miami this evening, the book launch is happening at Lester’s from 6 to 9.
